How to buy a phone: a checklist

A phone from a seller you trust can save you a lot of money if you check the right things before you buy.

1. Pick the right grade

The grade describes how the phone looks. For your own phone choose S1 or S2. S3 to S5 cost less and suit shopkeepers who resell. See the grades page for what each grade means.

2. Read the condition notes

Each product page lists highlights and any cosmetic damage. Read them before you pay: a clear description is a sign of an honest seller.

3. Compare the price across grades

The same model costs less in a lower grade. Decide how much cosmetic wear you accept for the saving.

4. Check the return window

Buy only where returns are clear. Phonoverse accepts eligible returns within 7 days of delivery.

5. Test the phone when it arrives

  • Check the screen, camera, speakers, microphone and charging port.
  • Check that the IMEI matches the invoice.
  • Use it for a few hours on your SIM and Wi-Fi before the return window ends.
